More Info About The Boatyard......And Living In One

This boatyard is amazing! Charlotte Harbor Boat Storage is a premier dry boat storage and do-it-yourself boatyard in SW Florida. They take extremely good care of your boat when transporting it in and out of the water. And it is safe and secure when you store it in their gated boatyard. They are located in a protected canal system off the west side of Charlotte Harbor mid-state off the Gulf of Mexico. Here are a couple of videos, one taken while standing on our boat, and another of our boat being put in the water when we did our sea trial.

Since we're living "on the hard", meaning the boat's up on stilts and we can live onboard while it's here in the yard, we are having to adjust to what we can and can't use on the boat. Electricity is not ran like regular shore power at a marina. Every few storage bays have a 110v plug for an extension cord to your boat. This runs lights, fan, TV, and a portable AC at night (since installing the boat AC is on the TO DO list). We have solar panels too, and right now, that runs the refrigerator & some lighting.. We have a holding tank for water, so we can wash dishes, but we're not using the head (bathroom). The toilet uses a raw water flush system, and we're just now adding water to the holding tank, so we're not showering on board. Nor, are we using the washer/dryer on the sundeck.

But one of the great amenities to the boatyard is "the hut". This open-air building with fans has 2 bathrooms with showers, laundry, a TV, refrigerator, and most kitchen utilities except for a stove. There's a couple of microwaves, convection oven, hot plate, roaster, rice cooker, pots, pans and dishes. Also a commercial ice maker with free ice. It's available to all customers of the yard.

We hear that over the next few months, all the snowbirds come down and get their boats cleaned and provisioned for cruising. So there are many potlucks going on around the holidays. We're looking forward to hearing their sailing and cruising tales and learn a thing or two from them. We'll definitely use this location for a home base, whenever we need some storage and work done on the boat. We highly recommend them.

  1. Interesting reading your blog, Nan. Our boat, Prairie Dog (36' trawler) is also stored in CHBS, closer to the gate than your new boat. We are in Michigan and will be down around Christmas, hoping to launch early in January, for 3 months cruise. Hope to meet you, unless you're long gone. Say hello to our friends, stored near you, particularly Don Hanson on "Ring of Fire" (also from Michigan). Also say hello to Al and Rosie, if they're still around.
